Many good adventures start with no plan, and this one was no different. We just hit the road, with the promise of sunshine and warmer weather in Florida calling our names. After we left Maryland, Jen, ever the organized one, started planning our adventure in earnest.
Our first stop was Rocky Mount Mills, a cool brewery complex where we decided to spend the night. We listened to live music, the kind that makes you want to tap your feet and sing along, and tasted many local brews. It was the perfect way to kick off our trip, laid-back and full of good vibes.
In the morning, we headed further south, and Jen, with her eagle eye for roadside attractions, found our first stop at the legendary Buc-ee’s in Florence, SC. Now, I have a rule for her: she is limited to just one item per Buc-ee’s stop. It made the decision-making process quite entertaining, let me tell you.
We continued our journey and found ourselves at Cartersville Country Winery for the night. Sipping wine as the sun went down, surrounded by the peaceful South Carolina countryside, was a welcome change from the highway.
The next day, our destination was Walkabout Campground in Georgia, where we planned to spend a few nights. But, of course, no road trip is complete without a few unexpected detours. This time, it was another Buc-ee’s, this one in Brunswick, GA. Jen stuck to her one-item rule, but I think she was tempted to break it!
One evening, we decided to venture out and try some authentic Southern cooking. We stumbled upon Steffens, a local family diner that’s been around since 1948. The food was incredible, the portions were huge, and the atmosphere was pure Southern hospitality. It felt like stepping back in time, and we loved every minute of it.
Another day, we explored Jekyll Island and checked out Driftwood Beach. It was a truly surreal and beautiful place, with weathered trees scattered across the sand like sculptures. We spent hours wandering around, taking photos, and just soaking in the unique scenery.
For dinner that night, we went to Capt. Stans for steak night. The steak was cooked to perfection and delicious. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring listening to live music.
Finally, we finished our journey with our third stop at Buc-ee’s in Daytona Beach, FL. Jen got her one item, we stocked up on road trip snacks, and we were on our way to our final destination.
We ended the afternoon at Buttonwood Bay in Sebring, FL, where we plan to spend the winter. The weather is warm, the people are friendly, and the pace of life is slow and relaxed. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long journey and enjoy the simple things in life. This adventure, unplanned as it was in the beginning, turned out to be exactly what we needed.
