Stayed at Walkabout Campground in Georgia for a few nights. It's been really nice watching this campground grow over the past 6 years. It's become one of Jen's favorite places to stay, mainly because they have goats, Highland cows, chickens, and pigs who all absolutely love her attention. She's like a farm animal whisperer, I swear! They all come running when they see her.
We had a fantastic Southern-cooked dinner at a local family diner called Steffens. They've been around since 1948, so you know they're doing something right! It's the kind of place where everyone knows everyone, and the sweet tea flows like water. I had the pork chop dinner and Jen went for the homemade meatloaf dinner. We both waddled out of there completely stuffed and happy.
The next day, we decided to head over to Jekyll Island to check out Driftwood Beach. Even though we had been here before, nothing really prepares you for seeing it in person. It's seriously cool. The beach is covered in these massive, gnarled driftwood trees, bleached white by the sun and the salt. They look like the skeletons of ancient giants, reaching up out of the sand.
We spent a good few hours wandering around, taking pictures, and just soaking up the atmosphere. It's a really unique and peaceful place, perfect for a bit of contemplation. Jen, of course, was in her element, clambering over the driftwood. I just tried not to fall and break anything!
That evening, we visited one of our favorite places called Capt. Stan's for dinner. It happened to be steak night, so naturally, I couldn't resist. Jen had a boston butt loaded baked potato. My steak was cooked perfectly – medium rare, just how I like it – and it came with all the usual fixings: baked potato, salad, the whole shebang. It was a great way to end another fun day with relaxing live music.
Walkabout Campground is definitely a gem. It's quiet, well-maintained, and the owners are super friendly. Plus, you can't beat the animal interactions. Jen's already planning our next trip back, and I have a feeling we'll be making it a regular thing. There's just something about the combination of friendly farm animals, delicious Southern food, and beautiful coastal scenery that makes it a perfect little getaway. I highly recommend it if you're ever looking for a relaxing and unique camping experience in Georgia. Just be prepared to share your affection with some very enthusiastic goats! And maybe bring some extra carrots for the Highland cows – they'll be your best friends forever.
