The weekend of July 12-13, 2025 was a much-needed escape from the everyday grind, filled with laughter, good food, and a healthy dose of nostalgia. It started with a long-overdue reconnection with some of my closest high school friends. Life has scattered us across different states and career paths, but the bond we forged in those formative years remains as strong as ever. We spent hours catching up, reminiscing about old times, and laughing until our sides ached. It's amazing how easily we fall back into our old dynamics, the years melting away as if no time had passed at all. These are the friendships that truly stand the test of time, the ones that offer unwavering support and understanding, no matter what life throws our way.
The highlight of the weekend, however, was a Sunday afternoon visit to Frankenmuth, Michigan. Known as "Little Bavaria," this charming town is a delightful slice of Germany nestled in the heart of the Midwest. From the moment we arrived, we were transported to another world. The architecture is distinctly German, with half-timbered buildings, flower-filled window boxes, and cobblestone streets. It truly felt like stepping into a picturesque German village.
Our main objective was to experience the world-famous Zehnder's, a Frankenmuth institution. We opted for their legendary Sunday lunch buffet, a seemingly endless spread of traditional German fare. From the crispy, golden-brown fried chicken (a Zehnder's specialty) to the prime rib carving station, savory sausages, creamy mashed potatoes, tangy sauerkraut and enormous dessert table, every dish was a testament to authentic German cooking. I piled my plate high, eager to sample everything. The food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The restaurant itself is massive, a labyrinth of dining rooms buzzing with families and tourists alike. It's a true testament to the enduring appeal of good food and good company.
After Zehnder's, we waddled our way through the charming streets, exploring the unique shops that line Main Street. There were cuckoo clocks, beer steins, and all sorts of German-themed souvenirs. While browsing in Frank’s Muth, we decided to indulge in some spiked slushies because, why not? These weren't your average slushies! They were packed with flavor and a generous dose of alcohol and were perfect to sip on while continuing the adventure.
As we strolled through the town soaking in the sights and sounds, we made our way to the Bavarian Inn Glockenspiel Tower, a focal point of the town square. We arrived just in time for the Glockenspiel show, a charming performance featuring intricate figurine movements depicting the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The music was lively and cheerful, and the story, though a bit dark, was brought to life in a captivating way. It was a delightful spectacle that added to the town's whimsical atmosphere.
As we continued our exploration, we couldn't help but be swept away by the town's festive spirit. Polka music filled the air, emanating from various shops and restaurants. We browsed the numerous shops, filled with German souvenirs, handcrafted gifts, and of course, plenty of Christmas ornaments (Frankenmuth is known for its year-round Christmas store, Bronner's).
To finish our day, we took a walk across the Holz Brucke, the town's iconic covered bridge. The bridge spans the Cass River, offering picturesque views of the town and the surrounding countryside. We paused to take photos, admiring the intricate woodwork and the peaceful flow of the river below.
Frankenmuth is more than just a tourist destination; it's an experience. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in German culture, savor delicious food, and create lasting memories. It's a place that celebrates tradition, community, and the simple pleasures of life.
At the end of the afternoon, we began our journey home. We were all feeling content and refreshed, our hearts full of happy memories. The combination of reconnecting with old friends and experiencing the unique charm of Frankenmuth made for a truly unforgettable day. It was a reminder of the importance of cherishing friendships, embracing new experiences, and finding joy in the simple things. I'm already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may take us.
