What an absolutely incredible couple of weeks we just had in the Dominican Republic! It feels like a dream already, but the memories and the taste of grilled fish on the beach are still so vivid. We’ve been coming here for years, but this trip felt particularly special.
The beaches, as always, were simply breathtaking. Playa Sosúa and Playa Alicia are two of our favorites. Playa Sosúa, with its calm, crystal-clear waters, was perfect for lounging and soaking up the sun. Then there’s Playa Alicia, which offered a more exhilarating experience with its rougher waves – a real spectacle to watch! We spent many hours just mesmerized by the power and beauty of the ocean.
Fishing was a major highlight this time around. We took our trusty 54’ Sportfisherman out a couple of times, and the catches were fantastic! We reeled in some beautiful yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi. There’s an unparalleled satisfaction in catching your own dinner, and the thrill of the fight is always exhilarating.
And what do you do with such fresh, delicious fish? You grill it on the beach, of course! Tony’s Bar became our go-to spot for this. There’s something magical about the simplicity of grilling fresh catch right on the sand, with the sound of the waves as your soundtrack. It’s an experience that truly embodies the relaxed and joyful spirit of the DR.
Speaking of fish, one evening at our own bar, Flip Flop Sports Bar, we had the most amazing yellowfin tuna prepared in three different ways. Each preparation was a culinary delight, showcasing the versatility of this magnificent fish. It was a perfect night, sharing good food and laughter with friends.
For the many kids, a trip to La Union for ice cream was a mandatory and much-anticipated event. Seeing their faces light up with joy over a simple ice cream treat is one of those pure pleasures of visiting with the locals.
One of the adventure days that stood out was our four-wheeler excursion through the mountainsides. The rugged terrain, the lush greenery, and the stunning vistas were unreal. But what made it truly memorable were the locals we encountered. Their warmth and hospitality were overwhelming. We even stopped for lunch in the most unique setting – right in the middle of a beautiful, clear river! It was an unforgettable experience, feeling the cool water around us while enjoying a delicious Dominican meal.
We were also incredibly fortunate to have our good friends, Bones and Nancy, join us for one of the weeks. Their presence added another layer of fun and camaraderie to an already fantastic trip. Sharing these experiences with close friends makes them even more special.
And of course, no trip to the DR is complete without indulging in the famous pig roasts. We had a couple of these feasts with our Dominican family, accompanied by generous portions of rice and beans, yuca, plenty of rum punch and music. These gatherings are more than just meals; they are celebrations of life, community, and friendship.
The time spent with our Dominican family and friends is always the heart of our visits. We saw so many familiar faces, shared countless stories, and renewed bonds that we cherish deeply. The genuine love and connection we feel here are what keep drawing us back. Sosúa truly feels like a second home, and this 2026 trip will undoubtedly be etched in our hearts forever.
